Let's Talk About The Silent Epidemic

Addressing the Opioid Epidemic in the NHPI Community

On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, SoCal PICRT in partnership with F.O.U. Movement hosted The State of the Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Community in Southern California: The Opioid Epidemic” to bring awareness to the opioid crisis affecting the NHPI community.

As part of SoCal PICRT’s Pacific Pathways program, which fosters health, wellness, and a drug-free lifestyle among Pacific Islander communities in Southern California, the event provided valuable data and resources to our nonprofit partners, as well as fostered a supportive environment for those impacted.

The evening’s program included a data presentation from the UCLA Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Data Policy Lab highlighting the impact of the opioid epidemic on the NHPI community and reasons for its disproportionate effect on our community.

Members of the F.O.U. Movement, both of whom once experienced addiction to opioids, provided heartfelt, insightful testimonials and performed a skit on how to talk to someone who is addicted to opioids, so that they can receive the help they need.

Partner organizations, including Pacific Islander Health Partnership, SSG Alliance, Mercy Health, Asian American Drug Abuse Program, and Pacific Asian Counseling Services, provided resources for mental health, drug abuse, COVID-19, and other information specific to the NHPI community.

This event launched SoCal PICRT’s “State of the Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Community in Southern California” series, which will address critical and often overlooked issues facing our community.
